Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming historical drama, The Dig. Based on John Preston‘s 2007 novel of the same name, the story chronicling Britain’s most famous archaeological excavation of the 20th century, looks to be an inspiring affair, with some gorgeous cinematography to boot.
Directed by Simon Stone (The Daughter), the film stars Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, and Ken Scott.
Check out the trailer and an official synopsis below. The Dig opens in select theaters January 15. It will be available to stream on Netflix January 29.
As WWII looms, a wealthy widow (Carey Mulligan) hires an amateur archaeologist (Ralph Fiennes) to excavate the burial mounds on her estate. When they make a historic discovery, the echoes of Britain’s past resonate in the face of its uncertain future.
